ABOUT AUSTIN MITCHELL

Austin Mitchell has been the Labour MP for Grimsby since 1977. Previously he was an academic (Nuffield College Oxford and New Zealand Universities) and a television journalist (BBC and Yorkshire Television). A former Parliamentary Private Secretary, Opposition Whip, Member of the Treasury, Civil Service Select Committee and Front Bench Spokesperson on Trade and Industry, he currently sits on the Agriculture Select Committee. He presented 'Target' with Norman Tebbit on SKY from 1989 to 1998. He can also be heard for a limited time only on Talk Radio from 10 am to midday on Sunday Mornings. He writes for The House Magazine, Accountancy Age and is the author of various books, a listing of which can be found here - Austin the Books.

He lives in Grimsby, though most of his time is spent driving between Grimsby- London - Halifax.

His interests include:-

Fishing (scrap the common fisheries policy)

Accountancy (more effective regulation) and insolvency (ditto partially because its a state he frequently borders on).

Economics (keep money cheap and the exchange rate competitive).

Europe (no monetary union, but otherwise as much "Europe" as the people will vote for).

History (where he lives a lot).

The development and well being of Grimsby (for which he will do almost anything).

Education and training (no one can get enough of either).

The media (a love hate relationship: love it when he is on, hate it when he is not).

Legal Reform, Consumer Affairs, Electoral Reform and Regional Government.

Austin started out on the right of the Labour Party, but in recent years it has moved so far right behind him that he is now the extreme left. Considered a dangerous revolutionary because of his belief in equality, public spending and state intervention in the economy and in markets and in full employment, which is basic to socialism. Not Old Labour- positively geriatric!
